The Kalona City Council is back at full strength.
At Monday’s meeting, the council unanimously appointed Hank Beisheim to fill the seat left vacant when Mark Robe was elected mayor.
“We met and talked with him for quite a while,” council member Jenelle Bender said. “He has grandchildren here, so he plans to be around. He has a real interest in serving the city and making the city a better place.”
Beisheim brings a wide background of experience to the council.
“I come from IT and police work,” Beisheim said. "I’m retired from IT work.”
Robe said Beisheim’s experience will benefit the city.
“He has a lot of different things in his back pocket,” Robe said. “He’s worked as a police officer and has construction knowledge and some IT knowledge.”
Beisheim has lived in Kalona for nearly eight years and was intrigued by the chance to serve on the council.
“I’ve always been interested in government workings,” he said. “I served as a police officer in two small towns, so I know what the small town thing is like. I enjoy those kinds of things.”
Beisheim’s term runs through Dec. 31, 2021. but city voters have 30 days to petition the city for a special election.
