Buckman tosses no-hitter

Lone Tree pitcher Abby Buckman was untouchable in the Lions’ Class 1A tournament game Monday night.

Buckman, a senior, tossed a no-hitter to lead the Lions to a 5-0 victory over Iowa Valley and into a second-round matchup against Highland.

Buckman struck out 16 and nearly threw a perfect game.

Holley Johnson had two hits for Lone Tree and scored twice.

The Lions (5-9) were set to face Highland on Wednesday night in a Region 8 quarterfinal.

The semifinals are Friday in Lisbon.

West Burlington 15

Lone Tree 1

Holley Johnson and Arlie Lorack each had two hits for the Lions. Lorack, a sophomore, drove in Lone Tree’s only run in the third inning.

Senior pitcher Abby Buckman struck out 11.

West Burlington had a pair of five-run innings, and was led by Raven Messamaker and Logan Kelley, who each had three hits.

 

July 7

English Valleys 7

Lone Tree 2

English Valleys scored three runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth inning to defeat Lone Tree.

The Lions scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but lost for the fifth straight time.

Lone Tree’s Kinley Hayes had a double and drove in a run. Holley Johnson, a senior, had two hits.

Lone Tree sophomore pitcher Arlie Lorack struck out five.

Addy Westfall and Kennedy Axmear each had two hits for English Valleys.

 

July 10

Lisbon 18

Lone Tree 7

Winning its 17th game of the season, Lisbon powered its way past Lone Tree with 18 hits. The Lions scored in every inning but one.

Lone Tree’s Abby Buckman, a senior playing in her final regular-season game, had two hits, including a double. Allison Marshek drove in two runs and had a stolen base.

Lone Tree sophomore pitcher Arlie Lorack struck out two.

Lisbon broke a 1-1 tie by scoring four times in the second inning. The Lions added one run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Paige Roos had five hits, scored three times and drove in two runs.
