The Mid-Prairie boys track team opened the spring sports season at Northern Iowa’s Dickinson relays on Tuesday, March 9. Sixty-nine schools, including many 3A and 4A programs, were on hand for the first meet of the spring.
Mid-Prairie junior Thaddeus Shetler and senior Jamie Stutsman started the season on the right foot, finishing 17th and 18th out of 49 in the 1600-meter run, respectively.
Shetler and Stutsman were first and second in their heat, finishing just under 4:47, and 13 of the runners who finished ahead of them were from 3A or 4A schools.
Golden Hawk sophomore Cain Brown had no trouble facing 3A or 4A competition in the high jump, finishing first at a height of 6-foot-5.
Forest City senior and 2019 2A state-qualifier Elijah Weaver finished second at 6-foot-2 .Only three athletes cleared the bar higher than 6-foot-1 at the last 2A state track meet.
“Cain had a great night, 6’5’’ is an impressive height to start the season,” Mid-Prairie coach Dain Jeppson said. “Especially since we missed last season. So he hadn’t jumped in a meet since his eighth grade year and he has had limited practice opportunities. He also ran a great leg in our 4x200.”
Mid-Prairie senior Clarke Latcham was fifth in his heat of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing 24th out of 50 hurdlers in 9:46. Senior Lucas Bontrager was 24th out of 39 in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:50.
“Thaddeus, Jamison, Lucas & Chandler (Hershberger) all had really nice races to lead our distance crew,” Jeppson said. “They have put in a lot of miles in over the winter, so it was fun to see them getting rewarded for their hard work.”
In the 60-meter dash, senior Nathan Quinby (7.63) and sophomore Braden Hartley (7.80) finished 55th and 76th out of 100.
The Mid-Prairie 4x200 meter relay was 26th out of 45 (1:40.11) and the 4x400 was 29th out of 35 (3:58.93).
