Obituary: David “Dave” LeRoy Slaughter, 75, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 surrounded by his family. Services: 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial: Lone Tree Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m., at Teahen Funeral Home, and after 9 a.m. on Friday at the church. Dave is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jan; son, Brett Slaughter (Elana Wilson) of Columbia, MO; daughter, Abby Slaughter of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter, Adriana Slaughter; mother-in-law, Jo Miller of Eldridge; two brothers, Keith (Diane) Slaughter and Rick (Peggy) Slaughter both of Iowa City; sister, Brenda (Joe) Ewing of Iowa City; sister-in-law Katie Slaughter of Amana; nieces and nephews, Randy (Jan) Slaughter of Lone Tree, Rod (Elizabeth) Slaughter of Nashville, TN, Todd (Tracy) Slaughter of Robins, Chad (Allyson) Slaughter of Solon, Clayton (Laura) Curtis of Holly Springs, NC, Shaun (Melissa) Slaughter of Iowa City, Lindsey (Ronan) Fudge of Iowa City, Raelyn Slaughter (Sean Kelly) of Dallas, TX, Andrew (Jordan) Ewing of Ankeny, Tom Ewing (Jana Everett) of London, Nate Ewing (Jane Nguyen) of Denver, CO, Olivia Ewing of Denver, CO and Grant Ewing (Kathryn Rapp) of Iowa City; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jeff Miller (Jane Chiappinelli), Brad (Trish) Miller, Laurie Sexton, Amy Miller, and Dan (Jill) Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judy (Danny) Curtis; brother, Gary (Marla) Slaughter; father-in-law, Dick Miller; and many cousins. David was born on July 17, 1948 in Iowa City, the son of Raymond and Helen Colbert Slaughter. He graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1967 and Kirkwood Community College in 1969. Dave served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972. Dave married Jan Miller on June 24, 1978 at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. Dave worked at Iowa Manufacturing/Cedarapids Inc/Raytheon/Terex as an engineer for 45 years, retiring in 2013. He was a member of American Legion Post 298 in Marion, and served as Vice President of the Tall Corn Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association. Dave enjoyed woodworking, working on cars, the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family. Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Dave’s name.
