Golden Hawks celebrate senior night with commanding first place finish

WELLMAN

It was time for the Golden Hawks to honor their accomplished senior class and what better way for those seniors to celebrate their last home meet than by collecting a commanding victory.

Mid-Prairie stood head and shoulders above the competition at the Golden Hawk Girls Relays, finishing with 207 team points to win the team championship on April 18.

It was a dominant performance for the Golden Hawks, the only team to earn more than 200 points. Pekin was the runner-up with 103 and Fairfield captured third place with 96.

After the 100m event Mid-Prairie took the time to honor their seniors: Abby Fleming, Ashley Harmsen, Danielle Hostetler, Emma Lueck, Kali Miller, Nora Pennington, Annika Poll, Behla Schmidt, Phoebe Shetler, and Greta Sieren. Paige Safly was also acknowledged but since she was at home sick she was honored by her parents and sister, Alaina Safly.

Among eight event titles Mid-Prairie won, three of those came from relay races.
In the 4x100 they won with the team of Myli Hershberger, Emma Lueck, Jovi Evans, and Dakota Mitchell, in the 800m relay they won with the team of Geta Sieren, Evans, Lueck, and Mitchell, and in the 1600m they won with the team of Danielle Hostetler, Sieren, Lueck, and Mitchell.

Evans and Lueck also excelled in individual events.

Lueck once again showcased her outstanding leaping ability, placing first in the long jump with an impressive distance of 17-01.50.

Evans, a standout sophomore, outraced the competition in the 100m and the 200m dash to take the gold in 13.16 and 27.32 respectively. Both Evans and Lueck were the top gold medal earners, with both finishing with four.

Fitting for senior night the other two gold medal performances belonged to Fleming and Schmidt.

Fleming won the 1500m with a first-place time of 5:22 and teammate freshman Averi Janecek was right behind her, placing second in 5:28. In the 100m hurdles Schmidt claimed the top spot with a time of 16.85. She also earned a runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles in 1:12.

Up next for Mid-Prairie is competing in the Drake Relays in Des Moines taking place from April 24-27.
