Golden Hawks top Wilton in dual

The Golden Hawks handled the wind and the Wilton Beavers at the Kalona Golf Course on Monday, April 26, coming away with a 191-198 win. It was their first conference dual win of the season.

“It is great to see the improvement in all of the golfers,” Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said. “They are working hard and having fun.”

Mid-Prairie was led by meet medalist Dominic McCain, who had eight pars on nine holes and finished just one over with a 37.

“His short game around the green was very good today,” Bender said. “He was able to get up and down to save par a few times.”

Sophomores Warren Scarff and Collin Gingerich each finished with 50 strokes and Ben Mattes rounded out the scoring with a total of 54.

“They were able to battle the wind and put together good rounds today and help us get the victory,” Bender said.

The Mid-Prairie JV shot its lowest nine hole team score of the season in a 232-239 loss.  Ian Schmidt was the runner-up medalist for the junior varsity with a total of 50.

Five of the six Mid-Prairie boys shot better on the back nine in the Wildcat Invitational in Durant on Tuesday, as the Golden Hawks moved from eighth place at the midway point to finish fourth out of 11 teams.

Senior Dominic McCain had two birdies over his final nine holes finishing his day with 39 strokes on the back nine and a total of 81 for fifth place individually.

“Our goal coming in was to shoot in the 390’s and finish fifth to seventh, and we did even better,” Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said.

“We finished fourth out of 11 teams and shot a 383, our season low by 19 strokes.”

Freshman Drew Schlabaugh, and sophomores Warren Scarff and Collin Miller each shot a new personal best score at the Wahkonsa Golf Course. Schlabaugh shot rounds of 50 and 48 for a total of 98. Scarff finished with a total of 101 (52, 49), and Miller shot a 46 on the back nine to finish with 103.

“The golfers battled the cold and windy conditions and were able to put up some good scores,” Bender said. “I am very pleased with how our golfers played today. This was the first time that four of the six had played the course — with Dominic and Ian only playing it once, and that was two years ago.”

Aiden Bush shot a 46 on the back nine to finish with a score of 105, he was no worse than one over par on each hole from 12-17. Ian Schmidt shot a 54 and 59 for a total of 113.
