The Highland Huskies softball team had a busy week, going 2-3 over five games.

Their overall record is 4-4, with a 3-2 Southeast Iowa Super Conference record.

The Highland Huskies softball team had a busy week, going 2-3 over five games.

Their overall record is 4-4, with a 3-2 Southeast Iowa Super Conference record.

 

June 23

Pekin 12

Highland 4

The Highland Huskies fell to Pekin 12-4 at home on July 23.

Highland jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning but could not hold onto that lead.

The Panthers scored two in the third, six in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead. Highland added a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Grace Batcheller and Jessica Kraus pitched three innings each and recorded two strikeouts each.

Kayla Cerny drove in two runs with a double and scored a run for the Huskies.

Mackinze Hora and Sarah Burton had two hits apiece.

 

June 24

Van Buren 2

Highland 1

In a tight game from start to finish, the Huskies fell to Van Buren 2-1 on the road on June 24.

After Van Buren scored a run in the bottom of the first, the next four innings were scoreless for both teams.

The Huskies tied the game at 1 apiece in the top of the sixth, but the Warriors answered with a run on the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Jessica Kraus pitched four innings for the Huskies, striking out six and giving up five hits and a run.

Dani Laughlin had three hits and a run scored for Highland.

Abbi Stransky had the team’s lone RBI.

 

June 25

Highland 6

Wapello 5 (9 innings)

It took nine innings for Highland to get by Wapello on the road on June 25.

Highland scored once in the top of the first, but Wapello answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Huskies added two runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead, which held until the Warriors tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth, Highland plated another run, but Wapello added two in the bottom of the inning.

Going into the seventh inning, Wapello held a 5-4 lead. The Huskies tied the game and held the Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Huskies managed a run in the top of the ninth.

They held off the Warriors in the bottom of the inning to take the win.

Jessica Kraus earned the win, pitching three innings, striking out four.

Grace Batcheller pitched six innings and struck out five.

Dani Laughlin and Abbi Stransky had two RBIs each.

 

June 27

Highland 6

Washington 4

Highland won their opening game of the Eddie Jones Memorial Tournament on June 27 topping Washington 6-4.

Highland scored all of their runs in the third inning, while Washington scored one in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Grace Batcheller earned the win for the Huskies, striking out four and giving up six hits and a walk over five and a third innings.

Carson Mellinger had a double and a single, drove in a run and scored a run for the Huskies.

Dani Laughlin had three singles and scored a run.

 

June 27

West Burlington 12

Highland 1

In their second game of the June 27 Eddie Jones Memorial Tournament, Highland fell to West Burlington 12-1.

By the end of the third inning, West Burlington held a 9-0 lead.

The Huskies spoiled the shutout with a lone run on an Abbi Stansky solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning.

Dani Laughlin had the Huskies’ other hit in the game.
