Huskies go .500, move to first place conference tie

The Highland Huskies went 2-2 last week to move their overall record to 4-3 on the season.

Their 4-1 conference record has them in a first place tie with Mediapolis in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North standings.

 

June 23

Highland 9

Pekin 4

On June 23, the Huskies went on the road and topped Pekin 9-4.

Highland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and expanded their lead to 9-1 in the fourth inning.

The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three runs, but the Highland lead was too much to overcome.

Cael Yeggy struck out nine over six innings for the Huskies, giving up four hits, three walks and a run.

Connor Grinstead had a homerun and five RBIs on the night.

Trevor McFarland and Mason McFarland each had two hits for the Huskies.

 

June 24

Van Buren 9

Highland 3

On June 24, Highland fell to Van Buren at home by a score of 9-3.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Warriors plated four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead.

Highland closed the gap to 4-3 in the third inning, but the Warriors scored five runs over the final two innings to pull away with the win.

Trevor McFarland had two hits and drove in all three Highland runs.

Mason McFarland recorded a pair of singles.

 

June 25

Highland 12

Wapello 1

Highland was at home again on June 25, dominating in a 12-1 win against Wapello.

The Huskies scored once in the first inning, and the Warriors tied the game in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, though, the Huskies exploded for nine runs to seal the win. They added two more in the fourth, making the score 12-1.

Chase Schultz pitched five innings for Highland, striking out seven and giving up one hit, one walk and one run.

The Huskies were active on the base paths with nine stolen bases. Luke Miller, Grant Colbert and Logan Bonebrake each recorded two steals.

Bill Laughlin had a double and two RBIs. Connor Grinstead and Chase Schultz had two RBIs each.

 

June 26

New London 6

Highland 0

The Huskies were shut out 6-0 at New London on June 26.

The Tigers scored a run in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth to secure the win.

Highland mustered only three hits – one each by Cael Yeggy, Kaige Vonnahme and Grant Colbert.

On the mound, Colbert and Bill Laughlin each struck out two Tiger batters.
