Joe Tischler joining The News as sports editor

Hello readers of The News. My name is Joe Tischler, and I am excited to be the new Sports Editor of The News. I look forward to covering the local high schools and community sports for you.

Most of my sports writing experience comes from my home state of Minnesota.

I got started in the business in McGregor, a small town in northern Minnesota, and moved on to my hometown of Mankato covering local high schools, colleges and pro teams.

One of the highlights of my career was covering the training camps of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Timberwolves, who held their preseason training camps in Mankato.

My last newspaper experience came with the Steele County Times in Owatonna.

My sports writing experience extends to the collegiate field as I worked for three different colleges and universities as a sports information director.

My venture has led me from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato to the University of Minnesota, Morris and down to Iowa to work at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

While I am Minnesota born, Iowa is the place that has changed my life as this is where I met my fiancée with a wedding date set for March.

While I have worked at colleges and universities, my passion of sports writing lies in high school and community sports.

In addition to covering games and events, I love finding special features to get the reader more in touch with the students and coaches in the area.

If you have an idea of a special feature that would be of interest for the community to know about, please do not hesitate to connect me and the paper.

Sports are a passion of mine.

In addition to covering games, I love going to them as a fan.

As you would expect, I follow the Minnesota professional sports teams closely – Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Wild.
