It was a twice as nice kind of night for the Golden Hawks as both Zoey Curtiss and Elise Gingerich scored two goals each in Mid-Prairie’s 5-0 win over the Northeast Rebels on May 3.
“They were both great tonight,” Mid-Prairie coach Truman Shetler said about Curtiss and Gingerich. “It’s good to have them kind of refocus a little bit and being able to find the net builds some confidence for both of them.”
In front of their home crowd Mid-Prairie’s defense held the Rebels to a goose egg on the scoreboard, marking their second shutout win of the season.
“Good to get another shutout tonight. Keeping the sheet clean is always good,” Mid-Prairie coach Truman Shetler said after the win. “When the ball is not in our defensive half, sometimes teams can get complacent and kind of lose focus a little bit, but that wasn’t the case tonight.”
On offense the Hawks were in attack mode, putting near constant pressure on the Rebel defense. They ended the game with 25 shots on goal with 11 coming from Gingerich and seven from Curtiss.
“It was good to be back on the attack most of the game tonight and keep putting pressure on and playing to our standard a little more than what we were the last couple games,” coach Shetler said.
Curtiss, a junior, scored the first and the last goal of the game.
She scored once in the first half and once again in the second half, bringing her season total to three.
For Gingreich both of her goals came in the second and they came back-to-back.
The standout sophomore scored her first goal with 16 minutes left in the game and then two minutes later she put on an encore to bring her season total to 12, the team lead.
“It was good to get them both on the scoresheet a couple times,” coach Shetler said about Gingerich and Curtiss. “Going forward, we need them to keep being big up top, so that way we can continue to win.
Scoring her first goal of the season was Gabby Geno. Geno, a freshman, made her goal in the first half to give Mid-Prairie a 2-0 lead before halftime.
Up next for Mid-Prairie (7-4) is a road game against Bellevue (3-8) on May 10 and then they will hit the road to battle Anamosa (9-2) on May 15.
