Ravens hold on for 1-0 win over CVC

The shorthanded Hillcrest soccer team got a little help from the Ravens’ golf squad during a 1-0 win over Cedar Valley Christian on Saturday morning.

With leading scorer Will Kolck and goalie Aiden Krabill unavailable, Hillcrest golfers Luke Schrock, London Schrock,  Jace Rempel and Josiah joined the soccer team for a day. They combined for six shots on the day and gave coach Marcus Miller some much needed depth.

“They’re just athletes and they had a lot of fun out here, I think, and it helped us,” Miller said. “And you can see, they can run, they can kick. I was happy they were able to help us out because otherwise it would have been a struggle with numbers today.”

The Ravens dominated the game in terms of total shots with 23 and shots on goal with 13, but the only attempt that found the net was a long kick from Noah Miller that was deflected by the bottom of the crossbar into the goal.

“I think we controlled the midfield a lot better than we have in the past,” Noah Miller said. “We took our time, we found each other’s feet well, and I think it just really created space for open shots. I think we had more shots in this game than we have all season.”

Senior Aaron Hershberger went out for soccer for the first time this year, and on Saturday he made his first appearance in the goal.

“I was super nervous,” Hershberger said. “And then Marcus told me, you know, just have confidence, and you’ll do good.”

Hershberger made seven saves during the shutout.

“The defense did a good job keeping the ball away from me,” Hershberger said. “But you know, sometimes it got through and that’s when I stepped up.”

While the Ravens’ head coach would have liked to see a few more of the 23 shot attempts converted, he was happy with the play of his inexperienced players, including the new goalie.

“I was a little worried in warm ups when it was wet, and the ball was slipping quite a bit. But (Hershberger) did a really nice job and he’s worked hard in practice. So it was nice to see him step up.

“Aidan Yoder came out, we talked him into trying soccer this week too when I was recruiting golf guys, and he did really well in the back. Andrew Starr was another one, a pretty young player, and he helped us out as well. It’s nice to have them come and help us out and then just do a nice solid job.”

Colubmus 2, Hillcrest 0

The Ravens suffered a 2-0 loss to Columbus on Tuesday. The Wildcats scored the first goal off of a header on a corner kick after about 30 minutes.

The second goal came early in the second half after one of the Raven defenders put his head on a ball that ended up going over the head of the Hillcrest goalie.

“Krabill made a valiant effort to gather in the ball but a bit of a scrum ensued and Columbus player poked it into the net for the 2-0 lead,” Miller said.

Eli Ours, Will Kolck and Johnny Diaz each put shot on goal for Hillcrest in the loss and Krabill made three saves.
