The Riverside City Council voted unanimously to pay $15,000 to the city of Kalona, covering a third of the cost to outfit an ambulance facility on a former Shiloh property.
The move follows the council’s 3-2 vote to withdraw from talks in early June after Wellman and Kalona rejected plans to house an ambulance in Riverside.
“I think there was just a lot of confusion between all the cities,” said Councilperson Edgar McGuire, who voted to cut off talks in June. “If they are feeling like they are ready to move forward, then I do think it would be nice if we help out… I think it’s only fair, to tell you the truth.”
Councilperson Jeanine Redlinger said she strongly supported the motion.
“I wanted to continue discussions from the beginning, and I’m the one that said it’s only fair that we all take part in the cost of it, so I’m good with it,” she said.
Though Wellman and Kalona agreed to split the facility’s cost evenly, its location in Kalona meant the latter would hire any contractors, thus the payment to Kalona rather than both other cities.
