Funeral services for Sylvanus “Chub” Miller Jr., 94, formerly of Kalona, will be held Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at 11 a.m., at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, with Chaplain Cindi McKee officiating.  Burial will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona.  Visitation will be held Friday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of service.  A memorial fund has been established for Crestview Specialty Care in West Branch, Iowa, where Chub passed away Jan. 11, 2020.

Sylvanus “Chub” Miller, Jr. was born Sept. 10, 1925, in rural Kalona, the son of Sylvanus and Martha (Beachy) Miller, Sr.    On June 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Eula Jean Figgins in Kalona.  To this union was born four sons: Von (Pam) of Iowa City, Max (Carla) of Marrero, La., Tim (Krys) of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Hal (Kathy) of Honey Creek, Iowa. 

Chub was an auto parts manager for many years, first at Gates Chevrolet in Kalona, then University Motors in Iowa City, followed by McIntyre Buick in Council Bluffs.   In July 1967 the family moved to Treynor, Iowa, so two of the boys could attend the Iowa School for the Deaf.  While in Treynor, Chub was associated with the Boy Scouts, where he was known as “The Colonel” for his commanding role in popcorn sales.  Chub and Eula Jean lived in Treynor until September of 2017, when they relocated to Crestview Specialty Care to be near Von and his family.  Eula Jean passed in April 2018.

Chub is survived by his four children; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Vida Yutzy in Hutchinson, Kan.

Preceding Chub in death were his parents; his wife; a sister: Edna Kauffman; and four brothers: Howard, John, Ray and Glen.
