The Wellman City Council agreed Monday that it will fill the seat that Mark Philpot is vacating at the end of the month by appointment.
Last month, Philpot announced that he is resigning effective July 1.
Mayor Ryan Miller explained that the council has two options to fill a vacancy.
“Iowa Code states that the council can appoint someone,” Miller said. “You would have to make a motion that that’s what you’re going to do, then we would have to publish that. The other option is just to set a date for a special election.”
He noted that a special election would cost the city between $800-$1,000.
“I would like to see us appoint someone,” council member Shannon McCain said. “It would be quite an expense to have a special election.”
Council member Aaron Fleming added, “I think voters would appreciate us not spending the money.”
Miller said that the appointment could be made at the council’s July 6 meeting.
Wellman voters can call for a special election by submitting a petition with at least 15% of the voters who cast ballots in the last city election.
