Wellman council members agreed Monday to continue the planning and construction of a splashpad in the community’s North Park.
Earlier this month, questions arose concerning the amount of water the pad would use and the city’s capacity to provide it during an unexpected drawdown on the city’s water supply.
Council members approved an agreement in May with engineering firm Shive-Hattery for the design of the sewer, water and drainage systems that would serve a planned splashpad in North Park. The 1,000 sq. ft. pad would be constructed near a site once used for sand volleyball. It is projected to cost $255,000 and would be paid for with money from a Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant.
However, some now questioned the timing of the construction, noting that the city was ready to begin a $5.1 million upgrade to its water system and convert its supply from its own pumps to service from the Wapello Rural Water Association (WRWA). Wellman Water/Waste Water Superintendent Tim Garrett assured council members that the water system could produce sufficient quantities for the city and the splashpad.
In other business, the council members approved quotes for removal of several trees and the application of herbicides and insecticides to city properties.
