WELLMAN
The City of Wellman has been contemplating the purchase of the lot located at 801 6th Street, a commercially zoned vacant lot with Highway 22 frontage that contains an LED sign. On Monday night, the city council approved the purchase.
“I personally think it’s a good thing for the city to own that property and be able to do something with it down the road,” Mayor Ryan Miller said at the council’s regular meeting on March 18.
Although the city does not have specific plans for what they might do with the lot, ideas have been floated for a veterans or first responders memorial or signage that would draw people downtown.
The existing LED sign can be removed and relocated elsewhere, Miller noted.
Other Council Action
The council approved a water purchase agreement with Wapello Rural Water Association.
The council passed second readings and waived third readings for four ordinances: one that allows beekeeping within city limits with some restrictions; one that increases utility deposit amounts for renters; one that updates liquor and cigarette permitting to comply with state legislation changes; and one that updates city fiscal management procedures to comply with state legislation changes.
Yard waste pickup day is scheduled for Monday, April 8.
The Wellman City Council will next meet on Monday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
