The 10th annual Independence Day Celebration at the Shiloh Amphitheater in Kalona is set for Saturday, July 3, and features a musical show about Our America.
Last year’s production was an eclectic look at some great moments of American history, as seen through the eyes of Scott McDonald, former resident of Kalona and comedian. Due to the outstanding response to the 1998 show, he has returned, along with his buddy and comedy partner, Roger Seward.
Cast
There is a 32-member cast for this year’s show and 22 dancers. The crew has 49 people from Los Angeles and 15 from Shiloh, which means that the production has more than 100 people involved at all levels.
Rehearsals and preparations for the show started in mid-May, including set building. In order to get set, lights and other equipment to rural Kalona, it required two 28-foot trucks, said director Rick Holbrook.
This year’s show also will have double the lighting system from last year’s and there will be a bigger sound system, he noted.
Our America will include dance numbers, comedy sketches and original musical scores performed by an ensemble cast. Included in the production, is a tribute to those who fight for this country and the loved ones who pray for their safe return.
The show will be followed by a musical fireworks display, the largest in its ten-year history, and is sponsored by an ever-increasing number of individuals and organizations.
In case of rain on Saturday, the alternative show date is Sunday, July 4.
The show starts at 9 p.m. in the Shiloh Amphitheater, 2255 133rd Street, Kalona. There have been record turnouts in previous years, so it is recommended that one arrive early. Bench-style and lawn seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Doors close at 8:45 p.m. Admission for the production and fireworks display is only $5 per car load. Tickets may be purchased from Shiloh or at the entrance.
