110th Street northwest of Kalona is open after bridge replacement

Kalona

After months of construction, the new bridge on 110th Street, northwest of Kalona, is complete, and both the road and bridge are open to traffic.

Construction began in May and was completed Friday, Oct. 30. The closure was west of Juniper Avenue, nearly three miles west of Highway 1.

The project replaced the bridge over Deer Creek near Juniper Avenue because of its narrow width and weight restrictions. Iowa Bridge and Culvert, L.C. of Washington was awarded the contract in July 2025 with a bid of $857,116.90.

The former bridge was 125 feet long and 20 feet wide. The new concrete slab bridge is 130 feet long and 30 feet wide.

According to the Washington County Engineer’s Office, the former bridge, built in 1952, was outdated. Its replacement removes the weight restrictions and improves access for two-way traffic in the area.
