IOWA CITY

More than $2.6 million was requested in funding applications for Johnson County Social Services block grants in Fiscal Year 2026.

Twenty-three of 31 applications were at least partly funded, Social Services Director Lynette Jacoby reported to the Board of Supervisors at its May 28 work session.

Requests totaling $2.069 million were recommended to be funded.

The Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County received $775,000 of $850,000 requested.

Remaining funding recommendations ranged from $3,745 for a county free lunch program to $144,450 for Community Crisis Services.

One of the leading funding priorities, Jacoby said, was to serve vulnerable residents in Johnson County.

That was reflected in the recommended funding, including more than $133,000 for Shelter House and $128,000 for 4 Cs of Johnson County, which offers educational and crisis childcare.

Road Trouble

A number of car accidents on 140th Street NE, northeast of Lake MacBride, have led county engineers to considering installing rumble strips near the intersections of 140th Street and Highway 1, and 140th Street and Ely Road.

“We have to do something about both of those intersections,” County Sheriff Brad Kunkel told the Board.

Additionally, County Engineer Paul Wittau recommends lowering the speed limit to 45 mph on Sugar Bottom Road NE between intersections with Mahaffey Bridge Road and Newport Road NE, southwest of Solon.

Board Action

The Board approved a $12,000 amendment to a professional services agreement with OPN Architects for planned work on the Dr. Lulu Merle Johnson exhibit.

The Board approved Fiscal Year 2026 fiscal agent and administrative services agreements with Johnson County Empowerment/Early Childhood Iowa Area Board.

The Board issued a proclamation in recognition of Pride Month.

Next meeting:

The Board’s next formal session is at 9 a.m. June 5.
