WELLMAN
The 3-point attack arrived early.
Brooks Weber, a sophomore starting his first game for Mid-Prairie’s boys basketball team, hit four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of last Friday’s home opener against Camanche.
Then, he stole the ball from a Camanche player and delivered a layup for two points.
Then came a fifth consecutive 3-pointer.
Five minutes in, Camanche trailed 19-6 and never stood a chance.
Weber scored a game-high 30 points, Bryce Henry scored 20 points and Mid-Prairie, the top-scoring team in the River Valley South, cruised to a 90-54 victory.
“We are a great offensive team and when we have a hot hand, we can definitely put up a lot of points,” Weber said.
In two victories last week, the Golden Hawks averaged 76.5 points, nearly 30 points more than any other team in the River Valley South and 14 points more than any team in the River Valley overall. Combined, they hit 32 3-pointers.
The win against Camanche featured the first 90-point game since 2010.
“Tonight was great,” Golden Hawks Coach Daren Lambert said. “We can’t expect to shoot like this throughout the entire season.”
Weber hit 8-of-12 3-pointers and Henry added four 3-pointers as the Golden Hawks built a 47-25 halftime lead and went ahead by 30, 75-45, by the end of the third quarter.
Senior point guard Brady Weber, Brooks’ older brother, added 13 points and 8 assists, and converted all six free throws.
Henry had a team-high 10 rebounds to get a double-double.
Mid-Prairie’s first two games featured Brooks Weber’s breakout game and a near career high by Ace Peck (23 points) in a win over Benton Community.
“They’re selfless,” Lambert said. “They want to win. They look for each other. Tonight, it was Brooks, and they fed him the ball.”
Mid-Prairie 63
Benton 43
Ace Peck and Brooks Weber each hit four 3-pointers, and Bryce Henry hit three in the Golden Hawks’ season-opening 20-point win at Benton Community in Van Horn.
Peck scored a game-high 23 points, missing his career high by just three points. He hit more than half his shots, leading Mid-Prairie’s strong shooting attack.
The Golden Hawks, ahead 30-24 at halftime, scored 13 of the first 14 points in the third quarter to blow the game open. A 3-pointer by Weber put the Golden Hawks in front by 18, 43-25, as the sophomore shouted and pumped his arms in celebration.
Peck started fast, scoring 7 of Mid-Prairie’s 15 points in the opening quarter.
Senior guard Brady Weber had a game-high 5 steals and a game-high 4 assists.
Conner Wiles and Kaden Kos each had 5 rebounds.
Benton’s Eli Patterson delivered a double-double: 14 points, 11 rebounds.
