KALONA

In early March, following the receipt of their FCC license, Mary’s Holy Voice KMHV 89.5 FM, officially began broadcasting from Kalona, bringing Catholic talk radio to the area. To dedicate the new station, a small group gathered at the radio tower during Holy Week on Tuesday, March 26, excited about their new venture.

Fathers Bill Roush (of Holy Family Parish in Riverside, Richmond, and Wellman) and Hai Dinh (of Sts. Mary and Joseph Parishes in Hills, Lone Tree, and Nichols) blessed the station.

“A proper use of the available communications media contributes greatly to the progress of the human family,” Fr Bill said during the dedication. “It’s also in complete accord with the plan of God. He wants us all to be found closely together in a union of truth and freedom.”

In prayer he asked, “Look with favor on your servants who use the technology discovered by long research, enable them to communicate truth, to foster love, to uphold justice and right, and to provide enjoyment.”

Following the blessing, those in attendance discussed how far their powerful 5500W signal reached based on their experiences. Anecdotally, the station could be heard as far as the east side of Iowa City, as far northwest as Williamsburg, and as far south as Swedesburg.

The station broadcasts programming from EWTN Global Catholic Radio and Relevant Radio.

Since conceiving the idea of a Catholic talk radio station in Kalona, it has taken station director John Reyland and his partners three years to obtain the required FCC licenses and permits, as well as secure a tower and operating space to get the station on air.

“Now that we’re in operation, we need to shift from startup to marketing,” he said.

Trying to stay warm inside the equipment shelter, the group discussed getting outdoor signage made to place outside the churches as well as soliciting donations to keep the station up and running.

“The number of Catholic radio stations has quadrupled since 2016,” Reyland commented before the group departed for the evening. “I think that there must be some divine plan here.”
