By fall, students at Kalona Elementary School hope to harvest the ingredients for making pizza. Students planted the pizza garden—featuring tomatoes, green peppers and oregano—this spring, and plan to make pizza sauce from them.
Plants were started in pots in the windows at the school with help from Mary Yoder, KES Booster president. Items were transplanted in mid-May.
The hexagonal garden was built last fall with the help of Jeff McArtor and Kalona Rotary Club members. It is the fourth garden built in the on-going outdoor classroom project at the school.
The 2nd graders from Kerri Bells’ class donated perennials for the butterfly gardens and first graders in Vanessa Yoder’s class, with the assistance of intern Jamie Bontrager, raised $30.60 from pop cans, donating the money to the classroom project. Funds were used for plants and mulch.
The 5th graders in Karen Fisher’s science class raised $75 from pop cans and bought bushes, perennials and mulch.
The 4th and 5th graders will water and weed the gardens throughout the summer.
