A thousand cranes flutter at M-P Middle School

The reading of a classic novel led Mid-Prairie Middle School students to some “heightened” cultural awareness.

The thousand paper cranes that fill the school’s multi-purpose room were the result of the 7th graders reading the novel Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. The story deals with a Japanese girl who is seriously ill and is told that if she makes a thousand paper cranes her wish (to be cured) will come true.

She makes 650 cranes before her death, but her classmates take up the task, completing it in her memory.

For 7th grader Nathan Cole, the story was an inspiration and he brought an origami crane to class. The 7th graders became intrigued by the process and set out to make a thousand cranes, all of which are now on display at the school.
