Annual blood drive Monday

Posted

\Members of the Kalona Optimist Club, in cooperation with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, will hold the community’s 23 annual blood drive Monday, January 17, in the Kalona Mennonite Church. Hours are 1:30-6:30 p.m. and goal is 100 units of blood.

In addition, the Optimists are striving to bring in 19 first-time donors for the drive.

Donors should contact any Optimist Club member or call 319-656-2134 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome the day of the drive as are those who are first-time donors.

Anyone age 17 or older, in general good health, may donate blood. Most prescribed medications, including high blood pressure, anti-depressant, thyroid and diabetic medications, are acceptable. Insulin dependent diabetics may now donate blood and are especially welcome to join the program. Anyone through age 75 may be a first-time donor.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the sole provider of blood and blood products to patients in 13 area hospitals, including Washington County Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

There is no doubt that donating blood is a death-defying act, and a good way to start a new year, new decade and new century.
