Gerald Yoder, Wellman, Stan Bauer, Washington and Ron Martinez, Kalona, recently completed an extensive training program in OPTIMUM* High Oil Grain export contracting and the TOPCROSS* Grain Production System, sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. They are among 450 Pioneer representatives selected from the Midwest to participate in the program. Contract signup for the 2000 growing season begins September 1.

A growing number of producers are interested in using the TOPCROSS Grain Production System either for their own livestock operations or to raise TC BLEND* high oil corn on contract for other livestock end-users— both domestic and export.

Pioneer participants received in-depth training on computerized decision-making tools, which will allow them to help customers evaluate the economic viability of growing value-enhanced grains in their individual operations and assist in the contracting process. As designated contracting experts in the area, they are also available to consult with interested growers about grain contracting opportunities for both corn and soybeans.

“The training program is unique to the industry and represents Pioneer’s commitment to helping our customers be financially successful in agriculture,” says Linda Wyss, product manager, corn feed traits at Pioneer. “We believe it’s essential to make the necessary investments in our representatives so they can bring the greatest possible service and added value to our customers.”

The TOPCROSS Grain Production System from Optimum Quality Grains, LLC, will be used on nearly two million total acres of corn ground. Pioneer has six TC BLEND products suitable for domestic and export contracting opportunities, plus one single-cross product suitable for farmer-feeders. Growers can receive up to a twenty-five-cent-per-bushel premium over market price for the OPTIMUM High Oil Grain grown under contract because of the higher oil content, higher total energy and higher levels of quality protein.

Pioneer Hi-Bred Inc. (NYSE-PHB) is the world’s leading supplier of agricultural genetics and is the leading developer and integrator of agricultural technology. Headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, Pioneer develops, produces and markets a full line of seeds microbial products and services to grain and livestock producers, grain processors and other customers worldwide.
