Born July 3, 1899, she was the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Guengerich) Bender. She attended rural Hickory Grove School. She was a member of Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

Barbara Hershberger, 100, of Kalona died suddenly Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in Pleasantview Home, Kalona.

Services were Sunday, January 2, in Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church near Wellman with the Reverends Elmer Miller and David L. Yoder officiating. Burial was in Upper Deer Creek Cemetery.

Born July 3, 1899, she was the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Guengerich) Bender. She attended rural Hickory Grove School. She was a member of Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

She was united in marriage to Simon N. Hershberger December 24, 1922 in Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Hershberger lived in the Wellman and Kalona communities all of her life except for two years spent in El Dorado, Arkansas where she was in Voluntary Service.

She worked in the laundry department at Pleasantview Home, Kalona. Mrs. Hershberger participated in Sewing Circle and enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking and reading.

Survivors include six children and their spouses, Verda and Cecil Miller of Kalona, Glenn and Phyllis Hershberger of Wellman, Paul and Alice Mary Hershberger of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Mary Ellen and Dan Miller Jr. of Boerne, Texas, Norma Jean and Joe Hostetler of Hesston, Kansas, and Carroll Hershberger of West Liberty; two daughters-in-law, Leola Hershberger White of Kalona and Ruth Hershberger of Wellman; twenty-eight grandchildren; fifty-seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Fannie Bender of Kalona.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, John Hershberger and James Hershberger; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel Bender and Edwin Bender; and four sisters, Nettie Miller, Mary Swartzendruber, Lydia Miller and Ellen Bender.

Memorials may be made to Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church and Pleasantview Home.
