Mid-Prairie High School & Mid-Prairie West Elementary have teamed up to offer Big Hawk Little Hawk (BHLH), a mentoring program involving Mid-Prairie High School students and 3rd and 4th graders from MP-West.
Sara Puttmann is the key organizer for BHLH after taking over the former mentoring program six years ago. This year 99 high school students applied to be mentors; 55 students from MP-West were matched.
Big Hawks (MP High School Students) visit Little Hawks (MP-West Students) two times per month. During the 40-minute timeframe students eat lunch together and have options to play games, read books, create a craft, or just talk.
This program allows our young students to build positive relationships with people they look up to. Additionally, this provides opportunities for our high school students to serve as leaders within our community while making an impact for our younger generation. BHLH is something our Little Hawks at West Elementary look forward to each session.
The Big Hawks and Little Hawks have a fun celebration in December and a finale celebration in April with pizza and cookie decorating at the high school and games utilizing the indoor practice facility.
