Board OKs deputies wage change for UI, off-duty events

Washington County Supervisors Tuesday approved an amendment to the county’s union contract for its deputies, setting a flat $65 hourly rate for working at the University of Iowa and other off-duty events.  Previously payment was based on an individual’s base wages; the change will cover all expenses with no cost to the county. All off-duty events will need prior approval from the county sheriff, and deputies need to record their hours of service; any pay for trade time will be determined on a case-by-case basis.  The amendment affects 23 deputies.

In other business, the board:

Held a public hearing in which County Engineer Jacob Thorius recommended approval of a tile crossing permit on 190th Street for Marilyn Sieren, trustee for Marilyn J. Sieren Revocable Trust in 76 Township.  Thorius explained that, after a review of the area, it was found that a culvert would not work there, and tile crossing is an appropriate request with the county covering the cost that involves its right of way.  Cost is $17,340 and will be provided as funds become available throughout the year, said Thorius.  Approval of the plan was unanimous.

Noted that a hearing and action regarding the McKain’s grading project and Dogwood Avenue was not necessary, that it was settled at the August 21 special meeting (see separate story).

Held public hearings regarding assessment of wind energy conversion property, in particular of taxation through a wind energy ordinance.   In discussion, it was suggested it be on the next agenda for a first and second reading with a waving of the third.  The ordinance was prepared months ago, but deferred when the initial wind company withdrew from consideration.

Approved the appointment of Greg Goodman to the Washington County Civil Service Commission.

Approved a change from casual part-time to regular-full time for Aspen Bromell, Washington County Communications Department, effective September 4 to go in three steps to $27.28 hourly.
