Bontrager and Yoder lead Ravens at SEISC meet

The five-member Hillcrest girls track team scored 45 points in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet at WACO on Thursday, led by senior Leah Bontrager who finished second in the 800 and 1500-meter races.

“Leah ran a couple races that were definitely season bests,” coach Marty Gingerich said. “And she ran her best 800, that was a PR at 2:30.”

Bontrager finished just a second behind Louisa-Muscatine’s KcKenna Hohenadel in the 800-meter run.

The distance medley of Malia Yoder, Morgyn Nafziger, Delaney Shaw and Bontrager finished second with a time of 4:51.99.

Yoder matched her best high jump of the season at 4-8 to finish runner-up to Wapello’s Patricia Hank at 4-10.

Yoder had no misses all the way through 4-8. She said that working on the event with Gingerich has improved her consistency over the season.

“I’ve definitely improved,” she said. “Before I would inconsistently get 4-6, but now I’ve been getting 4-8 pretty consistently.” Yoder cleared 4-8 easily, but was unable to improve on her PR.

“I think if I would have jumped like that at 4-10, I probably would’ve got that,” she said.

Yoder and Shaw finished fifth and sixth in the 200-meter dash and Shaw was seventh in the long jump. Nafziger was seventh in the 100-meter dash. Erin Bontrager ran the 4x400-meter relay with her three fellow freshmen, finishing seventh.

Quang Huynh set a new personal record of 12.96 in the 100-meter dash. He also set a new PR of 1:04 with a ninth place finish in the 400.
