Kalona is one of 24 communities in Iowa who will receive funding from Branching Out Rural, the Alliant Energy program that promotes tree planting.
Trees will be offered for sale to residents this spring. Prices are considerably less than the usual fee, thanks to the partnership between Alliant, Trees Forever and the communities.
Trees Forever selected the projects following a competitive grant application process. Kalona again was one of the communities selected.
Shannon Ramsay, president and co-founder of Trees Forever, said the rural projects chosen have a high level of youth involvement and demonstrated a strong commitment to reforestation and stewardship. They also show an ability to match dollars received with local contributions and maintain the projects after completion.
