Demotion of the Hickory Avenue Bridge, also known as the Maples Mill Bridge, will start October 11.
The bridge, damaged beyond repair when it was struck by a car in 1995, was abandoned by the Washington County Board of Supervisors in April. Demolition of the bridge was delayed throughout the summer to allow a citizens’ committee time to explore alternate plans and raise funds to possibly repair the structure.
County Attorney Barbara Edmondson said the unsafe condition of the bridge poses a hazard and people are advised not to go on the bridge.
The Washington County engineer’s office will arrange for the demolition that must be done before winter.
In April, a number of residents met with the supervisors in an attempt to retain the bridge, including asking if weight limits could be set, or even advising that it be “used at your own risk.”
Edmondson said that the county’s liability would not be diminished by such limits.
