WELLMAN
When Landry Gingerich hit a double to score two runs early in a game July 29, it finished off a rare Saturday hit parade for Mid-Prairie’s baseball team.
The Golden Hawks piled up 11 runs and 11 hits in five innings, and walked off with an 11-0 nonconference win against Washington.
Almost lost in all that offense was the first high school no-hitter by senior pitcher Bowen Burmeister. And because the Golden Hawks had an 11-run lead, activating Iowa’s mercy rule, Burmeister captured his no-no in just five innings.
“I don’t know if I count it as a real no-hitter,” Burmeister said, laughing. “No-hitter is a no-hitter, I guess.”
It was certainly that.
Burmeister struck out six and walked five in his last home game at Paul Bailey Field. The last one is Wednesday against Burlington Notre Dame, the second-ranked team in Class 1A.
“I was able to locate pitches,” Burmeister said. “When they put the ball in play, it was usually right at somebody, so that’s always nice. The defense, they’ve done a good job making plays all year.”
After not playing a game for four days, the Golden Hawks were ready to hit.
“All we’ve worked on all week is hitting the ball, hitting them low and hard, and working on our swings,” head coach Kyle Mullet said. “They did a good job today. I think we had three extra-base hits, which is huge.”
Brady Weber, Dylan Henry, Gingerich and Blake Swart led the hit parade with two hits apiece. Weber and Swart scored twice.
The Golden Hawks scored their 11 runs in just two innings, the third and fourth. After loading the bases with none out in the third inning, the Golden Hawks scored six runs on five consecutive plays. They included run-scoring a sacrifice fly hit by Tatem Telfer, an error and a two-run single by Gingerich.
Mid-Prairie 9
Sigourney 3
The Golden Hawks piled up six runs in the last three innings Monday to knock off Sigourney, the eighth-ranked team in Class 1A.
Sigourney (17-3) scored a run in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Mid-Prairie scored runs in each of the last five innings to capture its third consecutive win. The Golden Hawks averaged more than 10 runs in those three wins.
The Golden Hawks will play Mediapolis or West Burlington in a 2A district semifinal July 9 in Anamosa.
