The Mid-Prairie ninth grade girls basketball team was been busy this season.
The Hawks recently finished playing six games in seven days, and they finished their six games with a record of 3-3.
On, Jan. 5, the Hawks defeated Williamsburg, 36-22. Coach Sue Schweinfurth said, “The Hawks played well starting off the game in a tight man to man defense that stripped the Raiders of the ball numerous times.”
The Hawks forced 25 turnovers. Amber Watkinson led the team with five steals. Watkinson also led the team in scoring with 10 points while Allie Rath added eight. Tamra Gustafson and Julie Schweinfurth each had eight boards.
The Hawks faced Tipton on Jan. 7. Coach Schweinfurth said that Tipton killed them on the boards.
Tipton out-rebounded the Hawks 33 to 27, and 11 of those rebounds were offensive. Mid-Prairie lost 51-29.
Schweinfurth scored eight points while Gustafson added six.
Schweinfurth also ripped down 10 boards and Gustafson added six.
The Hawks took on Mount Vernon, Jan. 8 for in a doubleheader. Coach Schweinfurth said that Mid-Prairie only had seven players for this doubleheader, and Mid-Prairie had only a six minute break between games.
The Hawks faced Tipton for the second time in two days. Coach Schweinfurth said that revenge was on the team’s mind, as they wanted to take back the loss from the night before.
The Hawk’s zone defense and good penetration by the offense helped them defeat Tipton, 44-41.
Schweinfurth led all scorers with 18 points while Rath added 12. Watkinson had 10 points.
Gustafson again led the defense with 11 boards. Schweinfurth collected nine.
The Hawks couldn’t pull away with another victory against Mount Vernon. They lost 32-29.
Coach Schweinfurth said that they didn’t have enough legs to pull away.
Watkinson scored nine points and had three steals.
Rath added eight points, four steals and seven rebounds.
Sarah Yoder and Dawn Bulechek came off the bench to help the Hawks. Together, they combined for six points.
Mid-Prairie faced Mount Pleasant, Jan. 10.
Coach Schweinfurth said, “Many of the team members were still sore from playing two full games the weekend before and it showed.”
The Hawks lost 53-51.
Rath led in scoring with 19 points and had five boards.
Schweinfurth added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Watkinson added seven rebounds while Gustafson collected five.
Mid-Prairie defeated Mount Vernon, Jan. 11.
Coach Schweinfurth said that the Hawks were a little more prepared and took the game from the Mustangs, 29-27.
Five of the eight players scored for Mid-Prairie. Schweinfurth led the team with eight points.
Katie Peck and Rath followed with six, Gustafson with five and Watkinson with four.
Schweinfurth grabbed 14 rebounds while Gustafson added eight.
According to Coach Schweinfurth, “Jessica Hora also played an outstanding game leading the team with three assists and four steals.
“And her fourth steal was crucial to the game because it came in the final seconds to seal the win.”
Rath also played stellar defense and collected four steals.”
