Campaign law nixs public signs

The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, Des Moines and the local county auditor reminds all candidates (and campaigns) that it is illegal to erect campaign signs on public property or public-right-of-way. The Ethics Board may issue a Letter of Reprimand to persons with confirmed sign placement violations on the right-of-way.

Public right-of-way is described in general as the area between the street and the sidewalk in a city, and the area between the shoulder of the road and the fence line in rural areas.

Campaign signs should not be posted on utility poles or traffic sign poles. Campaign signs may be posted on private property with the permission of the property owner.

All campaign advertising, regardless of size or location must carry a disclaimer which notes who has arranged and paid for the ad.
