Candidate information should be easier to find

The GOP continues their effort to drive voter confusion and effectiveness by making the process so rule-bound and inaccessible that many citizens will be denied their Constitutional right to choose who makes the decisions that impact our lives as Iowans.

Re-districting has brought about changes in representation, but unfortunately our current leaders have failed to translate very clearly how those moving boundaries are impacting the upcoming elections.

One popular tool that people can access to recognize their representatives and senators is the “Find Your Legislator” program on the legis.iowa.gov website. However, beware that if you use that tool today you will be informed ONLY of your former legislator – the ones who have already ended their last session and who have checked out of service. This is misleading citizens who are affected by the changing districts because there is a failure to warn them that the answers given may be outdated, and no information offered as to how to get current accurate answers to the question: who are my choices for representation in the upcoming election? Iowa’s Secretary of State SHOULD be using this tool to inform voters, not confuse them. All it would take is a simple change in the program to direct voters to a CLEAR map of the new boundaries and a list of who is running in each House and Senate district. At the very least ALL this information should be available in a state where democracy is encouraged, not domineered.
