Carl W. Poe, 75, of Kalona, passed from this life on Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital, following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Kalona United Methodist Church in Kalona with Pastor Lisa Crow officiating. Burial will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. The service will be available via Livestream at the Beatty Peterseim website, Facebook and YouTube pages. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, from 4 – 7 p.m., at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the University of Iowa Organ Transplant Center and the Kalona United Methodist Church.
Carl Wayne Poe was born April 23, 1949, the son of Pearl and Helen (Gasper) Poe, Jr. He graduated from Montezuma High School and attended Maryville University in Missouri. Carl was married to Jo Shearer Patterson in 1978; the couple later divorced. They were active members of Easter Seals, raising money for disabled children and families. On Jan. 22, 2011, he was united in marriage to Deanna Yoder Redlinger. Carl was in construction all his life, working with his father, family and friends, traveling throughout the U.S. building press boxes and bleachers. The business operated in Montezuma, where they faithfully contributed to the community in many ways. He later owned and operated the Expert’s Edge Athletics and Construction Company.
Carl was a member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, was currently president of the Kalona Optimist Club, and enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, mushrooming, camp outs, fish fry’s and attending his grandchildren’s activities. Hunting and fishing trips with his lifelong friends were a special part of his life. Carl was a storyteller, and especially enjoyed telling jokes. In 2021 Carl received a new lease on life through a partner kidney transplant with his wife.
Survivors include his wife: Deanna of Kalona; six children: Scott (Angie) Patterson of Montezuma, Jeramy Poe of Iowa City, BJ (Nikki) Poe of Solon, Jenny (Dane) Miller of Kalona, Julie Redlinger of Wellman, and Janelle (Mitchell) Wayt of Davenport; five grandchildren: Kali and Kael Poe, Chloe Weber, Gavin and Abel Miller; one sister: Gayle (David) Lacasse of Center Point, New Hampshire; brothers-in-law: Marlin (Judy) Yoder of McLeansville, North Carolina, and Harlan (Mary) Yoder of Iowa City; sister-in-law: Donna Merck of Kalona; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Carl in death were his parents; and his brother-in-law: Lynn Merck.
