When summer comes around,

By Carolyn Beachy

There are so many things I like,

When summer comes around,

I’m loathe to see it go so fast,

I’d like to make the season last

Keep all the joys I’ve found.

The frogs that chorus in the night,

The hummingbird that hovers,

The butterflies around the flowers,

The pleasure ofl ong daylight hours,

The throwing off of covers.

The lazy days - and days of work

When sweat proliferates,

Kalona Days and the parade,

The garden tea that I have made,

Picnics with paper plates,

The garden produce that abounds,

The sound of hoe a’hoeing,

The lightning bugs and tents outside,

The bikes that go for many a ride,

The coming and the going…

Vacations, when you plan to see

Some sights not seen before;

Reunions here, or maybe there-

What years have done will be laid bare,

When you walk through the door.

The library, museum, mall-

Are repites from the heat,

And books will take you to and fro,

Though from your chair you do not go,

So many people meet.

The calls from friends not seen for years

Are welcome summer treats.

They’re coming through, so could they stay

A night or two while on their way?

Yes! Make my day complete!

The smell of grass, all freshly mown,

Or of impending rain,

The rainbow threading through the sky,

Or fireworks sparkling in July,

Are stamped upon my brain.

The taste of hot dogs from the grill,

The glass of lemonade,

The ice cream cones from Yotty’s shop-

You need a break, it’s time to stop,

And lick them in the shade.

The concerts in the park for all

To hear and to enjoy,

The swings and slides for kids at play,

The chance to seize each summer day,

With all it’s magic ploy.

There are so many things I like,

When summer comes around,

I’ m loath to see it go so fast,

I’d like to make the season last-

Keep all the joys I’ve found.
