Lacey Curtis, daughter of Gary and Becky Curtis and a sophomore at Mid-Prairie High School, was selected for the All-State Orchestra at the recent All-State Concert in Ames. She took a 5th chair place from the 24 cellists selected, and was among more than 200 student cellists who auditioned.
Curtis started her musical career at “about three and a half years old. I’ve been playing for nearly 13 years,” she said.
The playing involves not only the cello but also trombone and piano. In addition, she is an accomplished vocalist.
Besides the high school lessons and performances, she is a student at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City (as was her sister Tiffany) and has performed in concert with Preucil students in England in 1994 and Germany in 1997.
Last year she took a third on trombone at All-State, one of 20 in the entire district.
This year she decided “to go with the cello” and found herself with All-State honors.
While not completely decided about her future career, Curtis is fairly certain it will involve music, either in music education or performance.
