Ranked teams await each squad
The road to the 1999 Class 1A and 2A state baseball tournaments will be anything but easy for local teams.
Class 2A
Coach Tim Sauer’s final tournament run with Mid-Prairie begins Monday at Williamsburg against the home school. The two teams split a doubleheader at Wellman earlier this season.
The Golden Hawk-Raider battle is the second game of the evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The first game will pit Iowa City (Regina) and Belle Plaine at 5:30 p.m.
The two winners will play Thursday at Williamsburg at 7:30 p.m. From there, that winner will advance to the district championship game at Center-Point Urbana July 20.
On the bottom half of the draw is top-five ranked Center-Point-Urbana, returning state qualifier Jesup, Union of LaPorte City and Don Bosco of Gilbertville.
Class 1A
Three of the four News area teams meet up at Lone Tree Monday. IMS and Highland will hook up for the third time this season, with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch, while Lone Tree and Winfield-Mount Union play at 7:30 p.m. IMS and Lone Tree each won both previous meetings by close margins.
The winners play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Lone Tree. District final action is set for July 19 at Lisbon.
On the bottom half of the draw, highly-ranked Lisbon, Calamus-Wheatland, Olin and Bennett will battle.
Keota will open district play Monday at Victor against English Valleys at 7:30 p.m. A win by the Eagles would put them into a Wednesday game at 5:30 p.m. against highly-ranked Iowa Valley at Victor.
