Computers, classes and candy: Kirkwood Internet day

M&M candies and the Internet may seem to be an unlikely combination, but Kirkwood Community College brings them together February 9. That’s the day for informative programs and activities highlighting Kirkwood’s educational presence in cyberspace. The Surf Kirkwood— Out Virtual Campus demonstrations, course descriptions and promotional giveaways are planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. in the Linn Hall lobby, main Kirkwood campus.

The event is designed to help students learn how to access Kirkwood services by computer, according to Bob Burnes, Kirkwood’s Dean of Student Development. “We want students to know they can communicate with us and find useful information fast. Whether it’s at home, work or anywhere they have access to a computer— they can connect with us,” Burnes said.

Burnes also emphasized the convenience of on-line registration and the ease of electronic mail to communicate with faculty and staff. Kirkwood counselors will be on hand to show students how to access information on support services, counseling and advisors. Faculty members and staff involved with Internet courses will also be available for demonstrations and questions.

Representatives of McLeodUSA will also be on hand with information on their Internet access and electronic mail options offered especially for Kirkwood students. M&M/Mars, Inc. has provided Kirkwood with samples of the new “Crunch M&M,” available to all who visit the Linn Hall demonstrations, while supplies last.

More information about the event and Kirkwood’s electronic support services is available from Burnes at the Student Development office, 398-5584. He is also available via e-mail, at bburnes@kirkwood. cc.ia.us or via the college’s Internet address: www.kirkwood.cc.ia.us.
