IOWA CITY
Yes, construction season is about to begin and southwest Johnson County is one of the targeted areas.
Johnson County Secondary Roads is planning more than $7 million in highway work in southwestern portions of the county this year with another $3 million in Fiscal Year 2025.
The highway projects were part of a five-year plan presented to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at its March 6 work session.
The biggest of the work is a highway rehabilitation project on 540th Street SW that will be split into two phases over two years and is expected to run more than $6 million. The project will go along 540th Street from Highway 1 at the east end of the project to Calkins Avenue SW, where Hillcrest Academy is located.
Before that happens, a highway reconstruction project is set to occur on 540th Street east of Highway 1, going nearly half a mile to Gable Avenue SW. The project will change the road’s surface from chip seal to asphalt and is expected to be completed this spring by LL Pelling, a construction firm from North Liberty.
Other projects scheduled for FY24 are pavement rehabilitation on Angle Road; a bridge replacement over Crooked Creek on Naples Avenue SW, west of Hills; and a culvert replacement over Old Mans Creek on Sharon Center Road SW, north of Kalona.
The bridgework on Naples Avenue includes donated right-of-ways by property owners Josephine Kathryn Wieland, and Janis and Larry Tener. Bidding is expected to have an April 9 deadline with work done over the summer.
The department’s future priorities include improvements on Black Diamond Road between Highway 1 and the Iowa County line.
Tax Levy Hearing
The Board set a public hearing of 5:30 p.m. March 27 for the proposed property tax levies for Fiscal Year 2025.
Proposed property taxes are 5.99 countywide and 9.53 for rural. Both are down from the current year. The county’s taxable valuations have risen to $9.7 billion from $9.3 billion.
Board Action
The Board deferred action on a number of items, including multiple change orders with Tricon General Construction for work being done on the second level of the County Courthouse remodel.
The Board issued a proclamation in honor of Kidney Health Month.
Next meeting: The Board’s next formal session is at 5:30 p.m. March 14. The meeting is the county’s monthly evening session and public hearing for rezoning and platting applications.
