Meeting Tuesday morning, the Washington County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution supporting the work of the Citizen’s Safety Center Study Committee including need for a local option sales tax as a method of financing.

Citizens Study Committee Chairman Harvey Holden said the supervisors also approved a resolution stating that a local option sales tax election should be held, without setting any specifics for financing of the estimated $4.5 to $5 million cost of the facility. Governing bodies representing 50 per cent of the county electorate must request the election 105 days before a vote can be held. Since the supervisors don’t represent 50 per cent of the eligible voters, Holden was to present the same resolution to the Washington City Council to vote on Tuesday night, July 20.

The request must be made before July 30 to hold the election in November. Holden said all city councils in the county will have to pass a more specific resolution at their August meetings.

Wellman passed a resolution supporting the local option sales tax for financing the facility, but must now vote on approval of the official resolution.
