Memorial services were Monday, December 13 in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham with the Reverend Haywood Holderness officiating. A second memorial service will take place in the spring in Peterseim Funeral Home. Burial will be in Richmond at a later date. His ashes will lie with those of his son.

Born February 26, 1910, in Richmond, he was the son of William Frederick and Edith (Keifer) Welte. He graduated from Kalona High School and the University of Iowa where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Dale William Welt, 89, died Wednesday, December 9, 1999, in Croasdaile United Methodist Retirement Home in Durham, North Carolina, following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services were Monday, December 13 in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham with the Reverend Haywood Holderness officiating. A second memorial service will take place in the spring in Peterseim Funeral Home. Burial will be in Richmond at a later date. His ashes will lie with those of his son.

Born February 26, 1910, in Richmond, he was the son of William Frederick and Edith (Keifer) Welte. He graduated from Kalona High School and the University of Iowa where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

He was a longtime resident and civic leader of Iowa City. He owned an independent insurance agency, Welt-Ambrisco Agency, and was active in the business through his mid-70s.

He was past-president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and during World War II he headed the Iowa City scrap metal drive and volunteered with the American Red Cross. Later he was president of the Chamber of Commerce which awarded him lifetime membership.

He was named Iowa City’s Outstanding Businessman of 1960. He served on the Johnson County draft board, the Iowa City Library Board and served out an unexpired term on the City Council.

He was a member of the BPOE, Moose Lodge and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Browne Welt of Durham, North Carolina; two daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Nicholas Kredich of Durham and Phoebe and James Kent of Williamsburg, Virginia; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Wakeman Welt.
