Dates set for Kalona Tractor Cade and Classic Car Show

The Kalona City Council made brisk work of passing several resolutions with minimal discussion during the new business portion of their meeting Monday night.

The council acknowledged and approved dates for the Tractor Cade and Mayor’s Classic Car Show this summer.  Dean Miller hopes to finalize June 10 as the date for the Tractor Cade, and the Classic Car Show is planned for June 24.

“We’ll work with them on the route once we get a little bit closer,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.  “I would anticipate the route would be similar to what we have [done before], with the exception of Pleasantview working through their construction.”

Mayor Mark Robe said he was going to have signs and arrows made so that everyone driving a vehicle knows the route to follow.

A public hearing regarding a joint application for an Iowa Community Block Grant between Pleasantview and the City of Kalona received no comment, but it was moot.

“We are not going to take any action on this,” Schlabaugh said.  “In going through the grant application and working through with Pleasantview, there are a couple of hurdles that were presented after the December 22 meeting there that we got some clarification on.  We’re going to have to kind of reposition ourselves with this particular grant with a phase two project.”

The council passed a second and final reading of the Ordinance Adopting the Code of Ordinances of the City of Kalona.

The council passed a resolution appointing “The News” newspaper of Kalona the official newspaper for the city.  In the same resolution, Joe Schmidt and Craig Spitzer were appointed to the Recreation committee and the Streets and Alleys committee; Jenelle Bender and Greg Schmidt were appointed to the Finance committee; Bender and Hank Beisheim were appointed to the Water, Sewer, and Solid Waste committee; and Beisheim and Greg Schmidt were appointed to the Building and Grounds committee.  Bender was appointed Mayor Pro Tem; Washington County Public Health was appointed Health Officer; and William J. Sueppel was appointed City Attorney.

The council passed a resolution Making Appointments and Confirming Appointments of the Mayor of Kalona.  A single spot remains open on the Board of Adjustment.

Finally, the council approved an agreement for the 2023 Bridge Inspection Program with Calhoun-Burns Associates, Inc.

“Pretty straightforward.  About every other year we do this,” Schlabaugh said.  “Pretty standard stuff.”
