RIVERSIDE
The six district boundaries used in determining School Board Directors in the Highland Community School District will change July 1.
Based on data from the 2020 U.S. Census, the districts were redrawn and approved by the School Board at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, Feb. 13.
None of the current school board members will be affected by the district boundary adjustments although four of the seven directors (there is one director for each of the districts and president Nate Robinson holds the seventh at-large seat) will be up for election this year.
Ken Crawford, schools superintendent, said most of the boundary changes were a result of growing population numbers in the northern part of the school district, especially in and around the City of Riverside.
Due to each of the director districts being split closely in population numbers, as required by state code, the actual geographic area of the districts vary greatly. The largest district geographically is District 2, which stretches from north of Highland High School and down south to the Ainsworth area. The smallest geographically is District 5, which covers the City of Riverside.
The population in each district ranges from 638 to 672. The district’s entire population is 3,947.
The current district directors are: Rachel Longbine, District 1; Michael Golden, District 2; Monica Jepson, District 3; Dan Ruth, District 4; Melissa Murphy, District 5; Josh Thomann, District 6.
Headed to Barcelona
A group of 15 students will be headed to Barcelona and other Spain cities next summer as part of a school-sponsored trip.
“So much history. They’re going to learn so much,” said Molly Zywiec, Highland High School Spanish teacher.
Zywiec said the tour, which begins July 24, will also include stops in Madrid, Seville, Granada and Costa del Sol.
In addition to Molly Zywiec, others on the tour will include Angela Hazelett, Middle School and High School Principal, and Bill Zywiec, Dean of Students.
Board action
The board approved a summer learning and summer library program being planned at Highland Elementary.
The board approved the appointment of Deb Stewart to the TLC Oversight Committee.
The board approved a number of updates to district policies.
Next board meeting: The board will hold its next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. March 13. A work session is scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 27.
