Eldon Miller golfs in TEE Tournament
Eldon Miller, a 47-year-old visually impaired veteran, golfed the sixth annual Training, Exposure, Experience (TEE) Tournament for Blinded Veterans, hosted by the Iowa City VA Medical Center, in September.
Miller, an Army veteran from Kalona, was one of 110 legally blind veterans who participated in three days of activities. Tournament competitors not only learned new sporting skills, but also increased their independence and self-esteem through their accomplishments. The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center organized the TEE Tournament which gave blinded veterans at all levels of sight impairment opportunities for travel, golf, bowling, and leisure activities. This event was cosponsored by the Blinded Veterans Association and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Mid-Prairie CC to run the homecoming football
The Golden Hawks cross country team will relay the game ball for the football team’s homecoming game with Columbus on Friday night. The team will leave from the Pull’r Inn in Kalona at 4:30 and run along Highway 22 to the Mid-Prairie campus, presenting the ball to the officials prior to the start of the game.
Hershberger helps Simpson to a conference championship
Simpson College in Indianola won its fourth consecutive Iowa Conference women’s golf title by 18 strokes over Buena Vista last Saturday in Decorah.
Kalona native and IMS alumnus Beth Hershberger garnered all-conference honors and placed 11th overall by shooting a 178, winning a sudden-death play-off on the first hole.
For the Storm, it is their seventh straight IIAC title in the past eight years as their record stands at 4-1 with two meets remaining.
Hochstetler on Wartburg CC team
Doug Hochstetler of Kalona is a member of Wartburg College’s 1999 men’s cross country team.
Coached by Steve Johnson, the Knights are running in eight meets this fall. They will seek to defend their Iowa Conference championship at the IIAC meet in Storm Lake, October 30. Wartburg has won seven IIAC titles, including three in the ‘90s.
Hochstetler is the son of Pam and Jim Hochstetler.
Rec. Center women’s volleyball
Bar 31, Stumpf Concrete, and Stumpf Construction all won on the first night of competition of the women’s volleyball league. Freedom Security Bank, Hills Bank Kalona, and Travel Concepts stand at 0-1 after the first week of the season.
Optimist Halloween Party
The annual Optimist Halloween Party is set for Thursday, October 28, at the B-4 Building from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be a costume contest, games, and snacks.
