White to speak at Iowa Games

Former Green Bay Packer and Super Bowl XXXI Champion Reggie White will speak at the 1999 Iowa Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday, July 16 at 8:00 PM. The Opening Ceremonies are the official kickoff to the Iowa Games, which will be held July 16-18.

Admission is free to the general public and includes a parade of athletes, the 1999 Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship Award winners presented by former Iowa State University head basketball coach Johnny Orr, and some of the best fireworks in Iowa.

The Iowa Games Finals Fest will be held from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm with the Open Ceremonies to follow at 8:00 pm.

SE Jr. Select team to play Saturday

Mid-Prairie’s Brent Showalter and Iowa Mennonite School’s Jace Bailey and Luke Gingerich will be on the floor at Urbandale High School Saturday as the Southeast Iowa Junior Select boys basketball team competes in a tournament.

The four junior select teams from the state make up the tourney field. Games will be played at 2 and 3:30 pm.

VB rules meetings

Four local meetings are set for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union volleyball rule meetings in August.

Eldridge (North Scott) will have the first date (August 10), while Mount Pleasant will host a meeting August 16, Oskaloosa will host a meeting August 17 and Cedar Rapids Prairie will host a meeting August 18.

All meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m.

MS 150 August 14-15

The Iowa Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is recruiting riders and volunteers for the annual MS 150, August 14-15.

The ride will go from the Old Capitol in Iowa City to the State Capitol in Des Moines. Seven break points are set along the way, averaging nine miles apart. Overnight lodging will be available in Grinnell.

BIC events slated

On the Bicyclists of Iowa City club calendar are the following events:

July 8 - Thursday night leisure ride. Meet at College Green Park for an eight to 15 mile ride with planned refreshments during or after the ride. All are welcome including novice riders and those wanting to cycle at a leisurely pace. Call Gretchen Holt (319-354-1386) for more information. Starts at 6 p.m.

July 10-11 - Lake Darling Ride.

July 14 - Pedal with PIGS. Meet in the parking lot just east of Joensy’s Tavern in Solon at 6 p.m. for rides to Sutliff and Lisbon with the PIGS. Call Linda Thomae (319-338-2564) for more information.

July 15 - Thursday night leisure ride. Call Jim Ridenour (319-351-5731) for more information. Starts at 6 p.m.

July 17 - Windham Loop. Meet at College Green Park for a ride through the countryside. It will be mainly flat with at least one hill. For more information, contact Bernie or Cherie Cremers (319-338-0946).

Parnell/Williamsburg Loop. Also meet at College Green Park. Starting on F-46 out of Iowa City and stopping for refreshments in Williamsburg. From that point, the ride will head south on Highway 149 to Parnell before turning around back east for more scenic country roads on F52. Shorter mileage options are also available. July 17 rides begin at 8 a.m.

July 18 - Two rides, both beginning at 8 a.m.

West Here to West There. Ride through West Branch, Springdale, Rochester, Moscow, Wilton and Durant. The ride will start at the parking lot east of Casey’s on the square in West Branch. Call Marv Scher (319-351-2354) for more information.

Wilton ride. Meet at College Green Park, head out of town on Local Road with a quick stop in West Branch. From there, it’s on to Wilton via Rochester and Moscow. Contact Steve Hendrix for more information (319-337-3621).

Mercy-Kalona sets sports physical dates

Mercy Kalona Family Practice will be performing sports physicals on the following days:

July - 7 (morning), 13 (afternoon) and 20 (morning)

August - 11 (morning), 17 (afternoon) and 18 (morning)

The price will again be $25, payable at the time of service. If you want the visit billed to your insurance, it will be at the regular office visit price.

Presidential Races sign-up deadline approaching

Early bird registration for the 1999 Presidential Races, to be held as part of Hooverfest, are due July 20. Entry forms are available by calling 319-643-5327 or 800-828-0475.

The event is set for August 7.
