Election Results: Iowa House and Senate

Posted

Paul Pate, the Iowa Secretary of State, announced this November 2022 general election was the second highest turnout in state history for a midterm. There were more than 1,220,000 Iowans who voted, making the voter turnout about 55% as there are 2,234,666 registered voters in Iowa. The highest in state history for a midterm election was in 2018; 1,329,930 Iowans voted that year.

“My thanks to Iowans from every corner of the state who made their voices head by voting,” Secretary Pate said. “I also want to thank the poll workers and country election officials across Iowa for their hard work and dedication.”

All election results remain unofficial until post-election audits are completed, and results are properly certified. The deadline for this process is December 5.

State Senator: District 46

Dawn Driscoll, a 43-year-old Republican from Williamsburg, won re-election to the Iowa State Senate. She will now be representing Senate District 46 after defeating fellow incumbent, 59-year-old Democrat from Oxford, Kevin Kinney. District 46 covers Solon, North Liberty, and much of northeastern Johnson County. Portions of Washington and Iowa Counties are also included in District 46.

Overall, Driscoll received 14,798 votes, about 54%, and Kinney received 12,597 votes, about 46%. Both Driscoll and Kinney were already State Senators, but they were put against each other after the redistricting process, making this one of the closer elections during this midterm, with a total of 27,413 votes cast.

7,460 votes were cast in Iowa County and the majority, 4,772, went to Driscoll. Kinney received 2,681 votes and seven votes were write-ins.

11,182 votes were cast in Johnson County and the majority, 6,242, went to Kinney. Driscoll received 4,934 votes and six votes were write-ins.

8,771 votes were cast in Washington County and the majority, 5,092, went to Driscoll. Kinney received 3,674 votes and five votes were write-ins.

Driscoll has property taxes as one of the top priorities she will address as re-elected State Senator.

State Representative:

District 92

Heather Hora, a 53-year-old Republican from Washington, won election to the Iowa House of Representatives. She will now be representing District 92 after defeating the 68-year-old Democrat from Kalona, Eileen Beran. Both candidates were seeking their first term to represent District 92, which covers parts of Johnson County and all of Washington County. The former representative, Republican Jarad Klein from Keota, did not seek re-election, which left District 92 vacant.

Overall, Hora received 7,209 votes, about 60%, and Beran received 4,858 votes, about 40%. Hora was endorsed by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, and going into the election, Beran was considered a long shot bid to win, but she knew she wanted to run for office sooner rather than later when she realized there was an opening on the Democratic side of the ballot. There were 12,082 votes cast in total.

3,389 votes were cast in Johnson County and the majority, 1,748, went to Beran. Hora received 1,637 votes and four votes were write-ins.

8,693 votes were cast in Washington County and the majority, 5,572, went to Hora. Beran received 3,110 votes and 11 votes were write-ins.

Hora is glad she can be a Republican who represents Johnson County and wants to bring more hope for Republican residents of the county. She has her sights set on addressing property tax reform and education.
