Evans sisters, Hostetler help send Golden Hawks to league championship

TIPTON

Jeorgia Evans was just a little bit too quick in last week’s River Valley Conference track championships.

The Mid-Prairie freshman jumped the gun in the 100-meter race and was disqualified.

Everything else? She won.

Evans, who was the fastest high school freshman sprinter at the Drake Relays, won the 200 and the long jump, helping to lead the Golden Hawks to the girls team title on a day when both the Mid-Prairie girls and boys squads won team championships.

And then, there was older sister Jovi, a finalist in both the girls 100 and 200 last year at the state track championships at Drake. Jovi Evans finished third in the 100 with a time (12.89 seconds) that was faster than her fifth-place time in the state finals in 2024. She also placed fifth in the 200, behind Jeorgia’s winning time of 26.02 seconds, and ran the anchor leg on the Golden Hawks’ 4x200 winning squad.

In addition to Jeorgia Evans’ win in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 inches, the field events included a win by Dessa Poll in the discus and third-place finishes by Harper Pacha in the shot put and discus.

It all helped the Golden Hawks capture the team title with 125 points and send them to Monticello for Thursday’s state qualifier and district meet.

Rachel Hostetler, another freshman who already helped the Golden Hawks win a state team title in cross country last fall, finished second in the 1600-meter run and third in the 800. Cross country teammate Brooklyn Stutzman was third in the 3000.

Other top finishers included Kyrie Poll, who was fifth in the 400, and Kendal Landstrum, a cross country state champ who was fifth in the 800.

The Golden Hawks won one relay, finished second in two relays and was third in the Shuttle Hurdle.

Joining Jovi Evans in the 4x200 were Myli Hershberger, Hannah Rodgers and Ruby Miller for a winning time of 1:48.96. Jovi Evans ran the anchor leg in both the 4x200 and 4x100. She was joined by Jeorgia Evans, Kyrie Poll and Hershberger in the 4x100.

The Golden Hawks’ 4x800 squad finished second with cross country teammates Landstrum, Tessa Brokaw, Stutzman and Hostetler.

Claire Trimpe, Eva Marnin, Olivia Schlabach and Ruby Miller combined for a third-place finish in the Shuttle Hurdle.
