Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradneck issued a request this week for anyone planning a controlled burn to contact the dispatch centers in Johnson or Washington Counties before they start burn to prevent any unnecessary calls to fire departments.
Kalona firemen answered four fire calls on Monday, March 21:
• 2:31 p.m.: 4987 Hazelwood Ave. SW — trash fire that spread into a field.
• 3:31 p.m.: 3049 Blackwood Ave. NW, Oxford — assist in a hay bale fire. Kept fire from spreading.
•Late afternoon: assisted Wellman firemen in grass fire.
•Evening: called to controlled burn that was under control. Returned to fire station.
